Shelby Richardson

Shelby Richardson is a genuine, expressive artist from New Whiteland, IN. She received her early dance training from Style Dance Academy under the guidance of Alisha Slaughter, Kari Kermode, Laura Folley, and more. Here she learned various styles such as tap, lyrical, ballet, jazz, etc. She then continued her training at Ball State University, where she completed and earned her BFA degree in dance as well as an Undergraduate Degree in Physical Therapy. While there, she performed with the Ball State Dance Theatre Company in several main stage shows including guest artist pieces led by Alex Springer and Xan Burley from Doug Varone and Dancers and Sidra Bell, artistic director of Sidra Bell dance New York. Through the Theatre and Dance Department, Shelby was one of six students chosen for the summer study scholarship. This scholarship enabled her to study with the distinguished New York based company, Doug Varone and Dancers. She has also had the opportunity to work with prominent dance companies such as Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Visceral Dance Chicago, Common Thread Contemporary Dance Company, and Sidra Bell Dance New York. Shelby has performed at the Gala performance at American College Dance Association with the choreography of a graduated student. Shelby’s raw, pedestrian gestured choreography has been selected for various festivals such as Emerging Choreographers and RAD Fest. Her choreography was well received at the RAD Fest in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She also received the ASPiRE Undergraduate Creative Arts Grant for a student ran production with two Ball State students and herself. Through this production, they raised money for future dance students’ to create and show their work through a full production. She also received the ASPiRE Undergraduate Travel grant, which was used to help her and her dancers travel for festivals. As she continues to teach and choreograph at Expressenz Dance Center, she hopes to push her student’s to new heights and help them find their path through dance.
